The diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscle that plays a crucial role in respiratory function. It contracts and relaxes to control breathing, allowing air to flow into and out of the lungs. This direct involvement in respiration makes controlling breathing one of its primary functions.

Additionally, the diaphragm acts as a partition that separates the thoracic cavity (which houses the heart and lungs) from the abdominal cavity (which contains digestive organs). This separation is essential for maintaining the organization of these vital systems.

Another important role of the diaphragm is to support the abdominal contents. By providing a flexible barrier that helps maintain intra-abdominal pressure during various activities, the diaphragm aids in functions such as digestion and the stability of the core.

However, facilitating arm movements is not a function of the diaphragm. Arm movements are primarily controlled by muscles of the upper body, including those in the shoulders, arms, and upper back. Therefore, the diaphragm does not play a role in this aspect of bodily movement, making it the correct answer in identifying a function that is not associated with the diaphragm muscle.
